Cabinet Dentaire Meyrin

What does the dentist check during a dental check-up?

During a check-up, the dentist examines the teeth, the restorations, the gums, your hygiene and the signs you have noticed. X-rays are only suggested when they provide information that is needed. How often you come back depends on your oral health.

Dental check-up

What is examined?

The dentist starts with your questions, recent changes and any symptoms. They then examine the teeth, old restorations, gums, deposits and, when it concerns your situation, the way your teeth meet.

A check-up can spot a change before it causes discomfort. It can also confirm that an area simply needs to be monitored.

Are X-rays systematic?

No. The dentist suggests them when they show information that the examination alone cannot reach. The type of image and its timing depend on the clinical question.

Previous images, past treatments and the level of risk are taken into account. The team explains the reason for the examination proposed.

When should you come back?

The interval is not the same for everyone. It depends in particular on your history, cavities, gums, restorations, hygiene and certain health factors.

At the end of the check-up, the dentist tells you what comes next: no treatment, monitoring, a hygiene appointment or a treatment to plan. The options are explained before the decision.

Would you like to take stock?

The appointment is there to examine your mouth and tell you what comes next.

Frequently asked questions

Should I wait until it hurts to come in?

No. Some changes do not cause pain straight away and can be spotted during a check-up.

Does the check-up include scaling?

They are two separate procedures. The need for a hygiene appointment is decided according to the deposits and the gums.

What should I tell the dentist?

Mention your symptoms, changes in your health, your medicines and any treatment received since the last appointment.

Do you have a question about this treatment?

The appointment is there to examine your situation and explain what is possible. You decide afterwards.
