Does a cavity always cause symptoms?
No. A cavity may not hurt at first. Sensitivity to cold, heat or sugar, discomfort when chewing, a hole or pain can appear as it progresses, but these signs also have other possible causes.
Pain that fades does not prove the problem is solved. The diagnosis depends on examining the tooth.
How does the dentist confirm a cavity?
The dentist asks what you feel, examines the tooth and carries out the necessary checks. An X-ray may be suggested if it can show a hidden area between teeth or under an old repair.
They also look at why the cavity may have appeared and whether it is approaching the living part inside the tooth.
What treatment is proposed?
When the tooth can be restored, the affected tissue is removed and the shape rebuilt with a suitable material. The remaining volume, the position and the forces at play guide the type of restoration.
If the decay has reached the pulp, a root canal treatment may be needed. A very weakened tooth may then need wider protection, such as a crown, depending on the examination.
Is a tooth sensitive or painful?
