What do the implant and the bridge rest on?
The implant is an artificial root placed in the bone. A crown is then fixed on it once healing allows. The neighbouring teeth do not serve as supports.
A conventional bridge links the replacement tooth to adjacent teeth prepared to receive it. It can make sense when those teeth themselves need a restoration. Other types of bridges exist, depending on the area and the forces at play.
What does the dentist look at before advising you?
For an implant, they check the bone, the gums, the space available and your health. For a bridge, they look at whether the neighbouring teeth are strong enough to serve as supports. How you will be able to clean the area also matters.
The time needed, the cost and what matters to you are part of the discussion. You know the advantages and limits of each solution before choosing.
Is the course of treatment different?
For an implant, a first procedure places the implant, then the tooth is made after the necessary healing time. A bridge avoids placing an implant but generally uses the neighbouring teeth as supports.
The number of appointments is not enough to decide. The dentist also explains the length of the steps, the maintenance and the care the neighbouring teeth might need.
Hesitating between implant and bridge?
